The Grade 4 rapid on The Arkaig
Today, Andy, Andy, Will, Dave and I headed off to paddle The River Spean just outside Fort William. We started with the last rapid of the River Roy before joining The Spean. This is a grade 2/3 river with a 5-6 foot high fall of grade 3+ which in todays water level was a clean chute with a reasonably clean landing. We were on the river for a couple of hours and egressed at Spean Bridge. As it was only 13:30, 3 of us decided to run another river so Andy, Andy and I headed off down the River Arkaig which is a short trip with a significant grade 4 rapid shortly after the start. I employed the paddle like stink and get some serious air technique which saw me fly off the edge of the drop and avoid the stopper on landing (I might use that technique again as it worked so well). At only 3km the trip lasted less than an hour so we were soon back at the van and joined up with Dave and Will.
I am looking forward to tomorrow and unlike the last 5 weeks I am hoping for some rain to bring the levels up a bit.
