Silver DofE - Exmoor

Image
Out on a wet and misty Exmoor with Churchill Academy l assisting with some Silver DofE practice expeditions. I think the pictures explain it well!

Blast on The Barle

Image
Today Jo, Hannah and I had a quick blast on The Barle from Tarr Steps down to Dulverton.  I think this was my first (and possibly only) white water kayak trip of 2020. I am clearly out of practice in taking in focus photos for a start

Bridgwater College Apprentcies - Week Two

Image
Round Two! Another 30 odd students, 6 instructors, 4 minibuses, a trailer of bikes, a trailer of canoes/kayaks, lots of paperwork and driving of buses for me Working for Wet and High Adventures Ltd delivering Apprentice training for Bridgwater and Taunton College learners. I had a little more time this week so enjoyed a pasty on the beach at Porlock after dropping the groups off before heading back to manage some more kit and other teams returning from their activities.

Bridgwater College Apprentices - Week One

Image
This week I have been working for Wet and High Adventures Ltd overseeing 7 instructors and 30 Bridgwater College Apprentices on various activities including Team Building, Paddling, Biking and a 2 day Expedition on Exmoor. This means I mainly drove minibuses and issue kit whilst all the other had fun in the sun! Same again next week

BTEC Exmoor Expeditions 2

Image
A dry start to the three day expedition on Exmoor for Bridgwater and Taunton College Level 3 Uniformed Emergency Services students but that turned wet very quickly The same route as last week from Porlock Weir with a camp at Horner Scout Campsite, a trip over Dunkery Beacon (519m) and second camp at Halse Farm, and the finish at Tarr Steps this morning. Last week we stayed dry, this week we did not. From midday yesterday until into the evening it was pretty wet and there were a few soggy students when they arrived on site. However, all finished happily enough this morning with only light showers to keep them moving along.

BTEC Exmoor Expeditions 1

Image
For the last 3 days I have been on Exmoor with Bridgwater and Taunton College Level 3 Uniformed Emergency Services students for their assessed expedition. Starting at Porlock Weir with a camp at Horner Scout Campsite, a trip over Dunkery Beacon (519m)and second camp at Halse Farm, they made it to the finish at Tarr Steps this morning. We lucked out with the weather and it was nowhere near as wet as forecast. This does of course mean we will probably get rained on next week

Busy on The Barle

Image
A quick blast down The Barle from Tarr Steps with Hannah and Mike before having lunch in The Tavinty in Dulverton. Good levels today and loads of paddlers out on the river including a large group of 20 plus paddlers.

Kayak Coaching on The Barle

Image
Out on the River Barle today with 2 clients on a white water kayak refresher course. The levels were good and both the water and air were pleasantly warm. Lots looked at including crossing the river, running rapids, hitting eddies and for one of them a little swim.

White Water Kayak Coaching

Image
A great day coaching on " The Loop " section of The River Dart today with a group from Wellington School . A later start than normal just to allow the river to drop to a more friendly level saw 5 students with 6 adults paddle the river in two groups. A few swims today but good paddling from all involved.

Image
This is the second week I have been working for Wet and High Adventures Ltd managing an activity week for a group of apprentices from Bridgwater and Taunton College .  Only 30 clients, and 7 instructors this time. Still 4 minibuses and 2 trailers to sort out. Here are a few pics of what they got upto We had groups out kayaking and canoeing, mountain biking and on a mini expedition across Exmoor.

A wet and misty day on Exmoor today directing the first day of a Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment for Wet and High Adventures Ltd . Great to be out in the proper open moorland part of Exmoor that I don't get to go to very often.

Exmoor Expedition 3

Image
Just got home from the third and final Exmoor Expedition for Bridgwater and Taunton College  Public Services students. We had 2 days of wall to wall sunshine (the second being above the clouds). The last morning gave us a bit of rain just to make us have to deal with wet tents when we got back.

Exmoor Expedition 2

Image
For the last 3 days I have been back out with  Bridgwater and Taunton College  Public Services students on Exmoor for an expedition from Porlock Weir to Tarr Steps. This is the second one of these, the other being last week and fortunately it was a much drier experience until this morning when it decided to rain quite hard.

Exmoor Expedition 1

For the last 3 days I have been with Bridgwater and Taunton College Public Services students on Exmoor for an expedition from Porlock Weir to Tarr Steps. With the weather changing from warm and sunny to downright wet and miserable, all the students completed the walk and some even enjoyed it.
