A week of NCS

Image
This week I have again been at Cannington Activity Centre assisting with their large number of NCS students. Although I did a bit of Low Ropes and High Ropes, it was mainly Orienteering for me with an average of 20+ km being covered each day as I ran around groups. I am off to catch a ferry now, watch this space

A Week of Activities

The last three days I have been working for Cannington Activity Centre on their NCS programme. A mixture of running instructor observations, logistical support and running a couple of sessions myself. We had groups out biking, paddling, High Ropes, Low Ropes, Orienteering, Night Line and trips to Kilve Beach.

At Cannington Outdoor Education Centre today observing some Bridgwater and Taunton College Outdoor Ed students leading some Low Ropes sessions. Not as warm as the last 2 days but still a great day to be outside

Low Ropes Sign Offs

A great day in the sun this afternoon at Cannington Activity Centre assessing a couple of staff as Low Ropes instructors. Certainly one of the nicer days to be sitting on a grass bank watching people work Both staff passed so now even more students can use the excellent facilities that are available.

Low Ropes Assessments in the Sun

Out at Cannington Activity Centre assessing L3 Outdoor Education students on their Leadership od Land Based activities. Nice and warm in the sun but had to scrape the ice from some of the elements first.

It was a little too cold to go boating today, -3 at 9am so I took my L3 Outdoor Education students to Cannington Activity Centre for a play on the Low Ropes course instead.

High and Low Ropes Training and Assessment

Out at Cannington Activity Centre today working with staff on the newly refurbished High Ropes Course to make sure they are all up to speed with the new elements. We also had a group in on low ropes so I was able to observe some staff delivery in action. Somewhat cold at times but with plenty of coffee breaks a great day all round .

A busy day starting with delivering some High Ropes and Low Ropes Training at Cannington Activity Centre followed by some staff observations at Bridgwater YMCA. Basically I have ben watching people work all day! This afternoon was some last minute packing and admin as I am off to Northampton tomorrow to meet with the group from Caroline Chisholm School who I will be joining in Malawi from Wednesday.

Low Ropes

After a morning of cutting ropes, drilling, screwing and general admin, the refurbishment of the Low Ropes course at Cannington Activity Centre was complete. There were 4 NCS groups on it this afternoon giving it a good test. Such a nice afternoon after getting drenched in the morning whilst setting ropes.

High and Low Ropes Assessments

Back out at Cannington Activity Centre today for some competency assessments on both new and long term instructors. A good performance by all and was good to see some new ideas being used but staying within all the usual safety parameters.

This morning I was part of the interviewing team for the managers post at Cannington Activity Centre and after lunch ran a couple of sessions for a fantastic group from EDF energy. Sun all day and as we managed to wangle the interview outside I was able to make the most of it. Congratulations to the new manager and we hope to see you in post in the near future.

Mountain Bike Mayhem

Image
Working with my Bridgwater and Taunton College L3 Outdoor Students today and the day started badly when the bike trailer electrics failed. So, it was raid the activity centre store and build our own Mountain Bike course around the Low Ropes course. We had some pretty epic obstacles set up but as we couldn't work out how to get the bikes up the wall, we reverted to normal low ropes technique for that one.
