Out somewhere new today on The North Wessex Downs directing a Lowland Leader Assessment for Wet and High Adventures Ltd . After only a few minutes we had our first hazard to deal with, a railway crossing! Lots seen and done today and once the mist burnt off it was glorious sunshine. Within 2 minutes of getting home, I was called out in my role as a Marine Mammal Medic for British Divers Marine Life Rescue for a badly injured Porpoise at Burnham-on-Sea. Sadly we were unable to save it.

Today I was at Burnham on Sea helping out with (and refreshing my own skills) a Marine Mammal Medic course run by British Divers Marine Life Rescue . After a morning of theory it was onto the beach in glorious sunshine to rescue the model mammals we had with us. It was good to see a large turn out of new volunteers as well as existing medics (like myself) refreshing skills. Those new members will join us on the call out list for whenever we get strandings or poorly seals.

After a weak of teaching I swapped roles today and was a student on the British Divers Marine Life Rescue Medic Course based in Charmouth, Dorset. The reason I chose to do this course is that I spend a lot of time on and in the water and therefore have the capacity to be first or very quickly on the scene of a distressed mammal. The course looks at Seals, Dolphins and Whales and was a mixture of presentations and info in the morning with practical sessions in the sea during the afternoon. No animals were harmed in the pictures as they are all made of rubber and flooded with sea water.
